How the law deals with death and the serious and devastating harm caused by road trauma

The CIJ recently made a submission to the NSW Law Reform Commission’s review into serious road crime offences, highlighting the benefits of restorative justice in meeting the justice needs of people who have experienced road trauma.

How the law deals with death and the serious and devastating harm caused by road trauma is also the subject of an article by Karl Hoerr in the Law Society Journal.

In the article CIJ Associate Director Stan Winford is quoted in discussions about how restorative justice can be a more meaningful way of acknowledging harm than what is provided for in the criminal justice system, where even victim impact statements have limitations.

“The people that we worked with said that they’d experienced healing and recovery that they hadn’t been able to achieve either through the criminal justice process or through other forms of support.”

The CIJ is currently developing a restorative justice program for clients of the Transport Accident Commission in Victoria who have experienced serious harm from road trauma.
