The Yallum Yallum Project: Developing a self-determined justice model

This project aims to support the design of an independent self-determined justice model incorporating an ‘Elders and Respected Persons Council’, to be known as Yallum Yallum.

Yallum Yallum has been developed at the request of and in collaboration with the Victorian Aboriginal Community Services Association (VACSAL) and the Yallum Yallum steering committee of the Grampians Regional Aboriginal Justice Advisory Committee (RAJAC). The model aims to promote cultural healing, social and emotional wellbeing and turn Aboriginal people away from the justice system and towards a stronger role in their culture and community.

The CIJ project team delivered a draft model alongside a set of recommendations for implementation to the Goolum Goolum Aboriginal Cooperative to implement and test.

The model was completed in 2022.

The model aims to promote cultural healing and social and emotional wellbeing to address over representation of Aboriginal People in the justice system by diverting them towards a stronger role in their culture and community.

Project Update:

The Centre for Innovative Justice is working with the Goolum Goolum Aboriginal Cooperative as it implements the model. You can find out more about the program at Goolum Goolum.

As the implementation unfolds the model will provide an opportunity to further identify service gaps and funding necessary to complement and grow the model, in a way that is consistent with the vision and values identified by community.

Yallum Yallum Elders and Respected Persons Council

The community have appointed a group of Elders and respected persons to form the Council.

The CIJ has worked with the Council as it begins its work. This has included working with Council to set its guiding values, designing procedures for the operation of the Council with Council members, and providing training to Council members on trauma-informed restorative practice.
